Ingredients

Béchamel Sauce: – 4 tablespoons unsalted butter – 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour – 2 cups milk – Salt and freshly ground pepper

Lasagna: – 1 tablespoon unsalted butter – 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion – 1 garlic clove, minced – 3/4 lb boneless flounder fillets, cut into bite-sized pieces – 1 pound raw shrimp, peeled and deveined – 1 pound scallops – Salt and freshly ground pepper – ½ cup dry white wine – 2 cups thinly sliced mushrooms – 1 cup crushed canned tomatoes – 3/4 cup heavy cream – ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes – 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley – ¼ teaspoon dried oregano – ¼ teaspoon dried basil – 9 lasagna noodles, cooked according to package directions – 1 cup grated Swiss cheese – 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare Béchamel Sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour with a whisk until blended. Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat and continue stirring until the sauce thickens and becomes smooth, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.

  2. Cook Seafood: In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add onions and garlic, cooking for about a minute until fragrant. Add in flounder, shrimp, and scallops, seasoning with salt and pepper. Once the shrimp start to turn pink, pour in the wine and bring to a gentle boil. Remove from heat and transfer seafood to a bowl, leaving the liquid in the skillet for the next step.

  3. Prepare Sauce: Return the skillet with the reserved liquid to the stove and bring to a simmer. Add mushrooms and cook for about five minutes until they soften. Stir in the béchamel sauce, followed by the tomatoes, and let it simmer for an additional five to six minutes. Incorporate cream, red pepper flakes, parsley, oregano, basil, and adjust seasoning to taste. Mix in any liquid accumulated from the seafood bowl, then remove from heat.

  4. Assemble Lasagna: Preheat oven to 375°F. Butter a 9×13 casserole dish generously. Spread a thin layer of sauce at the bottom of the dish, then add one-third of the seafood mixture. Cover with more sauce and place three lasagna noodles on top. Repeat the layering process twice more, finishing with remaining noodles and sauce. Sprinkle Swiss and Parmesan cheese evenly on top.

  5. Bake: Cover the casserole dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 50 minutes, until the lasagna is hot and bubbly. For a golden crust, remove the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.

Kitchen Tools You’ll Need

To ensure a smooth cooking process, gather the following kitchen tools before you begin: – Medium saucepan for the béchamel sauce – Large skillet for cooking the seafood and sauce – Whisk to prevent lumps in the béchamel – Slotted spoon for transferring seafood – 9×13 casserole dish for assembling and baking the lasagna – Oven preheated to 375°F

The Benefits of Each Ingredient

Every ingredient in this Seafood Lasagna plays a crucial role in creating the perfect balance of flavors and textures, contributing to the dish’s overall success.

Seafood (flounder, shrimp, scallops)

These provide a delicate, sweet flavor and are an excellent source of protein, making the dish both nourishing and satisfying. The variety of seafood adds complexity and ensures a delightful bite in every forkful.

Béchamel Sauce

This creamy base ties the dish together, offering richness without overpowering the seafood. Its smooth texture complements the layers of pasta and seafood, creating a cohesive dish.

Mushrooms

They add an earthy depth, enhancing the umami profile of the dish. Mushrooms absorb flavors well, making them an ideal addition to the sauce.

Swiss and Parmesan Cheese

These cheeses melt beautifully, forming a golden crust that adds a savory, nutty note. Their distinct flavors enhance the overall taste and add an irresistible finishing touch.

Herbs (parsley, oregano, basil)

Fresh and dried herbs provide aromatic flavors that complement the seafood perfectly. They add a touch of brightness and elevate the dish with their fragrant presence.

What to Serve With This Dish

To round out your meal, consider pairing the Seafood Lasagna with complementary sides and beverages:

Salad

A fresh, crisp salad with a light vinaigrette is a perfect side to cut through the rich flavors of the lasagna. Consider a simple arugula or mixed greens salad with a lemon vinaigrette to balance the richness of the main dish.

Bread

A loaf of crusty garlic bread would be a delightful accompaniment, perfect for mopping up any sauce left on the plate. The crunch of the bread contrasts beautifully with the creamy lasagna.

Wine

For a refreshing drink, consider serving a chilled glass of white wine, such as a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, which pairs beautifully with seafood. The acidity of the wine complements the richness of the dish, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Storage & Leftover Tips

If you have any leftovers, you’re in luck! Seafood Lasagna tastes even better the next day as the flavors continue to meld. Here are some tips for storing and reheating:

Refrigeration

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. The lasagna remains delicious and is easy to reheat.

Freezing

You can also freeze the lasagna for up to two months. Ensure it’s tightly wrapped or stored in a freezer-safe container. To reheat, let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight before warming it in the oven.

Reheating

To reheat, cover the dish with foil and warm it in the oven at 350°F until heated through. This method helps retain moisture and prevents drying out.

Cooking at home is not just about feeding the body; it’s about feeding the soul.
