Beef and Marinade
  • 450 g beef strips (sirloin or ribeye) Cut into thin strips
  • 30 g vegetable oil Divided use
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Use fresh garlic for best flavor
  • 15 g grated fresh ginger Use fresh ginger for aromatic flavor
  • 15 g soy sauce Adds umami flavor
  • 15 g oyster sauce (optional) Adds depth to the marinade
  • 1 tsp sesame oil For a nuttier flavor

Sauce
  • 30 g soy sauce Base of the sauce
  • 30 g oyster sauce (optional) Enhances the sauce flavor
  • 30 g hoisin sauce Adds sweetness to the sauce
  • 30 g rice vinegar Adds acidity and balance
  • 15 g cornstarch Thickens the sauce
Onions
  • 1 large onion, sliced For sautéing
  • 15 g vegetable oil For cooking onions
  • tsp Salt and pepper to taste For seasoning onions

Method
 

  1. Prepare the Steak: In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, ginger, garlic, and sesame oil.
  2. Toss the beef strips in the marinade and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Cook the Onions: Heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add sliced onions and sauté until soft and slightly caramelized.
  5. Season with salt and pepper, then remove from the pan and set aside.
  6. Sear the Beef: In the same pan, heat 2 tbsp vegetable oil over high heat.
  7. Add the marinated beef strips and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned.
  8. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch.
  9. Pour the sauce over the beef and let simmer until it thickens.
  10. Combine & Serve: Add the sautéed onions back into the pan, stirring to combine.
  11. Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

This dish pairs well with steamed rice or noodles. Adjust the level of spice by adding more or less pepper, and experiment with different vegetables for added variety.
