Ingredients

Sandwich Ingredients
  • 4 slices marble rye or rye bread Choose fresh, high-quality bread for best results
  • 8 oz thinly sliced corned beef Use deli-sliced corned beef for convenience
  • 1 cup sauerkraut Well drained to prevent sogginess
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese Use imported Swiss cheese for authentic taste
  • 3 tbsp Thousand Island or Russian dressing Adds tangy flavor
  • 2 tbsp softened butter For spreading on the bread
  • 1 tsp oil For the skillet to prevent sticking

Equipment

  • Skillet

Method

  1. Drain the sauerkraut very well and gently squeeze out excess liquid so the sandwich doesn't become soggy.
  2. Spread Thousand Island dressing on one side of each slice of rye bread. Layer the corned beef, sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese on two slices. Top with the remaining bread slices, dressing-side down.
  3. Spread softened butter evenly over the outside of each sandwich.
  4. Place a skillet over medium-low heat and add the oil.
  5. Place the sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for about 3–4 minutes per side, gently pressing with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and crisp and the cheese is completely melted.
  6. Remove from the skillet and let the sandwiches rest for 1–2 minutes. Slice in half and serve hot with extra dressing if desired.

Notes

Keep the heat at medium-low to allow the cheese to melt completely without burning the bread. Serve with pickles or coleslaw for a classic deli experience.
