A hearty, comforting meal featuring tender hamburger steak smothered in a rich, flavorful gravy that will have everyone coming back for seconds. Perfect for weeknight dinners or special family meals.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4-5 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¼ pounds (570 grams) ground beef (90% lean)
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup (30 grams) breadcrumbs (dried, not fresh)
  • ½ cup yellow onion (finely diced)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 8 ounces (225 grams) mushrooms (sliced – use white or cremini)
  • 1 medium yellow onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups (350 ml) beef broth (can be subbed with chicken broth)
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Chopped fresh parsley (to garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, onion, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper
  2. Mix everything until just combined, then divide into 4-5 equal portions
  3. Form each portion into an oval-shaped patty that is about ½ inch thick
  4. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat
  5. Add patties to the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes per side until browned and internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C)
  6. Remove patties from skillet and set aside on a plate, cover with foil to keep warm
  7. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat
  8. Add mushrooms and onions, cook for 4-5 minutes until onions become translucent and mushrooms soften
  9. Add garlic and cook for additional 30 seconds until fragrant
  10. Add flour and cook while stirring for 30 seconds to form a roux
  11. Gradually pour in beef broth while whisking to avoid lumps
  12. Bring mixture to a boil then lower heat to simmer for 3 minutes until sauce thickens
  13. Season gravy with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper
  14. Return hamburger steaks to skillet with gravy
  15. Spoon sauce over steaks and simmer together for 5 minutes
  16. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve

Notes

Use lean ground beef for a healthier option. Can substitute ground turkey but ensure it reaches 165°F (74°C). For thicker gravy, let flour cook longer or add extra tablespoon of flour. Hamburger mixture can be prepared 8 hours in advance and refrigerated.
