French Onion Gnocchi

French Onion Gnocchi – Cozy, Cheesy, and Pure Comfort Food

A cozy, cheesy comfort dish that combines caramelized onions, tender gnocchi, and bubbling Gruyère cheese for a hearty French onion–inspired meal.

  • Total Time: 38 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (about 2 cups)
  • ¼ cup (60 g) red wine
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 ½ cups (360 g) beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 package (16 ounces) potato gnocchi, uncooked
  • 1 ½ cups (169.5 g) Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • Parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil and butter in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add sliced onions. Cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring often, until onions are soft and deeply caramelized.
  2. Add the red wine and cook until fully evaporated.
  3. Season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Stir well.
  4. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer.
  5. Lower heat and add gnocchi. Cook 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender and cooked through.
  6. Sprinkle shredded Gruyère cheese evenly over the top. Broil for 2–3 minutes until melted, bubbling, and golden brown.
  7. Remove from oven, garnish with parsley, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Substitute vegetable broth for beef broth to make this vegetarian-friendly.
  • Use a mix of onions (yellow + sweet) for deeper flavor.
  • Gruyère can be swapped with Swiss or mozzarella if preferred.
