French Onion Butter Rice

A rich, savory, and irresistibly buttery baked rice dish with all the flavor of French onion soup. Just 5 pantry-friendly ingredients, one dish, and minimal effort required!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long grain white rice (uncooked)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) French onion soup (condensed)
  • 1 cup beef broth (or water with bouillon)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, sliced
  • 1 packet dry onion soup mix
  • Optional Add-ins:
  • 1/2 cup sautéed mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 or 9×9 inch baking dish.
  2. In the baking dish, combine rice, French onion soup, beef broth, and onion soup mix. Stir to combine evenly.
  3. Scatter butter slices evenly over the top — do not stir.
  4. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove foil and bake for an additional 30–35 minutes, or until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.
  6. Fluff gently with a fork. Top with cheese, fresh parsley, or serve as-is. Enjoy warm!

Notes

  • Use vegetable broth and vegetarian onion soup mix for a meatless version.
  • Brown rice can be used but will require longer cooking and additional liquid.
  • For extra depth, stir in sautéed mushrooms before baking.
  • Pairs well with nearly any protein — chicken, beef, or even a poached egg!
  • Let the rice rest 5 minutes before fluffing for best texture.
