- For the donuts:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/3 cup light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup apple sauce (or finely grated apple)
- 1/4 cup milk (any kind)
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

- For the crumb topping:
- 2 tablespoons cold butter
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- For the glaze (optional):
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1–2 tablespoons milk
- Pinch of cinnamon
- Dash of vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan and set aside.
- Make the crumb topping: Mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Chill until needed.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In another bowl, whisk together brown sugar, applesauce, milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla.
- Add wet to dry ingredients and mix just until combined. Do not overmix.
- Fill donut pan wells about 2/3 full. Sprinkle generously with crumb topping.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until donuts spring back and toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool in pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack.
- Mix glaze ingredients and drizzle over cooled donuts, if using.
Notes
- Use unsweetened applesauce or freshly grated apple for best flavor.
- Don’t overmix the batter—keep it tender.
- No donut pan? Use a muffin tin—bake a few minutes longer.
- Freeze unglazed donuts and glaze before serving.
- Want extra texture? Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumb topping.
