  • Total Time: 22 minutes
  • Yield: 6 donuts 1x

Ingredients

Scale
    • For the donuts:
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
    • 1/4 cup apple sauce (or finely grated apple)
    • 1/4 cup milk (any kind)
    • 1 large egg
    • 2 tablespoons melted butter
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    • For the crumb topping:
    • 2 tablespoons cold butter
    • 2 tablespoons flour
    • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
    • Pinch of salt

  • For the glaze (optional):
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Dash of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan and set aside.
  2. Make the crumb topping: Mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Chill until needed.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together brown sugar, applesauce, milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla.
  5. Add wet to dry ingredients and mix just until combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fill donut pan wells about 2/3 full. Sprinkle generously with crumb topping.
  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until donuts spring back and toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool in pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack.
  9. Mix glaze ingredients and drizzle over cooled donuts, if using.

Notes

  • Use unsweetened applesauce or freshly grated apple for best flavor.
  • Don’t overmix the batter—keep it tender.
  • No donut pan? Use a muffin tin—bake a few minutes longer.
  • Freeze unglazed donuts and glaze before serving.
  • Want extra texture? Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumb topping.
