Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 4 cups peeled and chopped apples (about 4 medium apples)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.
- Pour in the melted butter and mix with a fork or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Press about two-thirds of the crumble mixture evenly into the prepared pan to form the base.
- In a separate bowl, toss the chopped apples with granulated sugar and lemon juice.
- Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust layer.
- Sprinkle the remaining crumble mixture over the apples, gently pressing it down to cover.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Allow to cool completely in the pan before using the parchment overhang to lift the bars out. Cut into squares and serve.
Notes
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced sweetness and tartness in the bars.
- For added texture, sprinkle chopped nuts such as walnuts or pecans on top before baking.
