Ingredients
Scale
- 6 hot dog buns (split but not fully separated)
- 6 all-beef hot dogs
- 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting buns)
- 2 cups prepared chili (canned or homemade)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or cheese blend)
- 1/2 small red onion, finely diced (optional)
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard (optional, for drizzling)
- Optional Garnishes:
- Sliced green onions
- Jalapeños
- Crushed tortilla chips
- Sour cream or ranch drizzle
- Pickled red onions
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter the insides of the hot dog buns and place them in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Toast the buns in the oven for 5 minutes to help prevent sogginess.
- Place one hot dog in each bun. If needed, slice them lengthwise to fit better.
- Spoon the chili evenly over the hot dogs and into the spaces between the buns.
- Top with shredded cheese, covering all the chili and hot dogs generously.
- Cover loosely with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 5–10 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Let cool for 5 minutes. Top with diced red onions, green onions, jalapeños, mustard drizzle, or any other toppings you love. Serve hot!
Notes
- Toast buns before assembling to avoid sogginess.
- Use bratwursts or sausages for a twist—just cook them first.
- Make it vegetarian with plant-based hot dogs and chili.
- Customize with your favorite toppings—spicy, cheesy, or crunchy!
- Leftover chili? Use it here—it’s a great way to repurpose it.
