Fully Loaded Classic Chili Cheese Dog Casserole

This Fully Loaded Classic Chili Cheese Dog Casserole is all the flavors of a ballpark favorite baked into one gooey, meaty, cheesy dish. With toasted buns, juicy hot dogs, hearty chili, and bubbling cheddar, it’s the ultimate comfort food for game day, parties, or any hungry crowd.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 hot dog buns (split but not fully separated)
  • 6 all-beef hot dogs
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting buns)
  • 2 cups prepared chili (canned or homemade)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or cheese blend)
  • 1/2 small red onion, finely diced (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard (optional, for drizzling)
  • Optional Garnishes:
  • Sliced green onions
  • Jalapeños
  • Crushed tortilla chips
  • Sour cream or ranch drizzle
  • Pickled red onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly butter the insides of the hot dog buns and place them in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Toast the buns in the oven for 5 minutes to help prevent sogginess.
  3. Place one hot dog in each bun. If needed, slice them lengthwise to fit better.
  4. Spoon the chili evenly over the hot dogs and into the spaces between the buns.
  5. Top with shredded cheese, covering all the chili and hot dogs generously.
  6. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 5–10 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  7. Let cool for 5 minutes. Top with diced red onions, green onions, jalapeños, mustard drizzle, or any other toppings you love. Serve hot!

Notes

  • Toast buns before assembling to avoid sogginess.
  • Use bratwursts or sausages for a twist—just cook them first.
  • Make it vegetarian with plant-based hot dogs and chili.
  • Customize with your favorite toppings—spicy, cheesy, or crunchy!
  • Leftover chili? Use it here—it’s a great way to repurpose it.
