Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/8 inch thick
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheddar and Gruyère)
- 1 ½ cups heavy cream
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- ½ cup additional shredded cheese (optional, for layering)
Instructions
- Prepping the Potatoes – Peel and thinly slice the potatoes (about 1/8 inch thick). Tip: Use a mandoline slicer for even slices and quicker prep!
- Preparing the Cheese Sauce – Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in garlic powder and onion powder, cooking for about 1 minute until fragrant. Add heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer. Slowly whisk in shredded cheese, one handful at a time, until fully melted and smooth. Avoid boiling to prevent separation.
- Assembling the Dish – Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Layer half the potato slices in the dish, slightly overlapping them. Pour half the cheese sauce evenly over the potatoes. Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce. For extra cheesiness, sprinkle shredded cheese between the layers!
- Baking to Perfection – Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 25-30 minutes until golden brown and bubbly. For a crispy top, broil for the last 5 minutes—just watch carefully to prevent burning!
- Serve & Enjoy – Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs for an extra touch of flavor!
