Cabbage and Ground Beef

Simple, hearty, and full of flavor—this Cabbage and Ground Beef Skillet is a one-pan wonder perfect for busy weeknights, meal prep, or lazy weekends. Made with just a handful of ingredients, it’s budget-friendly, low-carb, and incredibly satisfying.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85/15 or leaner)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small head green cabbage, chopped (about 67 cups)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Optional Additions:
  • 1 diced bell pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Splash of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Drain excess fat if needed. Set aside.
  2. Sauté onions and garlic: In the same skillet, heat olive oil and cook diced onion for 5 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds more.
  3. Cook the cabbage: Add chopped cabbage, season with salt and pepper, and sauté for 10–12 minutes until softened and lightly caramelized.
  4. Combine and flavor: Return beef to the skillet. Add Worcestershire sauce, red pepper flakes, or any desired flavor boosters. Stir and cook for another 2–3 minutes to blend flavors.
  5. Taste and serve: Adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use bagged coleslaw mix for a quick shortcut—just reduce the cook time.
  • For a tangy finish, add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice at the end.
  • Add cooked rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice to stretch the dish.
  • To make it creamy, stir in sour cream, cream cheese, or shredded cheese at the end.
  • Great for meal prep—make a double batch and freeze half.
