Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (85/15 or leaner)
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small head green cabbage, chopped (about 6–7 cups)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Optional Additions:
- 1 diced bell pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Splash of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, etc.)
Instructions
- Brown the beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Drain excess fat if needed. Set aside.
- Sauté onions and garlic: In the same skillet, heat olive oil and cook diced onion for 5 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds more.
- Cook the cabbage: Add chopped cabbage, season with salt and pepper, and sauté for 10–12 minutes until softened and lightly caramelized.
- Combine and flavor: Return beef to the skillet. Add Worcestershire sauce, red pepper flakes, or any desired flavor boosters. Stir and cook for another 2–3 minutes to blend flavors.
- Taste and serve: Adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
- Use bagged coleslaw mix for a quick shortcut—just reduce the cook time.
- For a tangy finish, add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice at the end.
- Add cooked rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice to stretch the dish.
- To make it creamy, stir in sour cream, cream cheese, or shredded cheese at the end.
- Great for meal prep—make a double batch and freeze half.
