  • 1 large egg

  • For the Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting:
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the applesauce and vanilla extract until combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Pour into the prepared dish and smooth the top.
  5. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool completely.
  6. For the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until fluffy.
  7. Frost the cooled cake evenly, slice, and serve.
