- For the Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8×8-inch baking dish.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the applesauce and vanilla extract until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Pour into the prepared dish and smooth the top.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until fluffy.
- Frost the cooled cake evenly, slice, and serve.
Notes
- You can substitute whole wheat flour for a portion of the all-purpose flour for a nuttier flavor.
- This cake keeps well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
